Free-ranging dogs and game.

 Friday, March 19, 2021

The winter cold has passed, it is almost time to set the clock one hour forward again; we are now really moving towards spring. And that is also noticeable in the forests; the animals are becoming more active and many young will be born.

How nice is it to go out into the woods with your dog in this weather? Of course we also allow the dogs the freedom to run and play freely. However, pay attention to where you let go of the dog. In many forests in the Netherlands a lead requirement applies and there is a reason for that. It is important to be extra vigilant about your dog, especially in the time when many fawns are born . With a number of dogs, the hunting instinct is so great that they chase deer or find fawns in the forest.

So do you want to get out into the woods this weekend? If so, pay attention to the following for the safety of the game, but also of your dog:

🌳 Make sure your dog is on a lead where it should be

🌳 Stay on the hiking trails and do not deviate from them

🌳 When in a run-off area, make sure your dog is under recall

🌳 Be vigilant, keep an eye on your dog when it wants to follow a scent

🌳 Did your dog find a fawn? Then leave this cub alone. Often the mother will return when the coast is clear.

Did your dog unexpectedly find a wild animal and did he go after it? Or did he bite an animal, so that it is now (seriously) injured? If so contact Meldpunt 144. We can forward you to the correct authorities. You can also call us for advice when in doubt.
