In memoriam: Chelsea 'She hadn't a bad bone in her body"

Sunday October 1st.

Yesterday Gemma and Jaime, Chelsea's adoring owners, had to say goodbye to their beloved girl. Nine years ago she was among a group of puppies 'loaned' by various shelters, including ACE, to take part in a puppy training course not far from the Refugio. Gemma and Jaime were among the trainers and totally fell in love with her. She was the gentlest, most affectionate and loving dog. Nine years ago I did the UK home visit, as we don't have an organisation set up here.

Chelsea charmed everyone who met her and Gemma and Jamie gave her a wonderful life. They are dog trainers so their home is a paradise for their dogs. Chelsea definitely fell with 'her paws in the butter'. Some years ago Gemma and Jamie set up UK Sniffer Dogs, and Chelsea became their poster girl.

Above all this sweet Spanish girl was loved and cherished and is terribly missed. RIP Chelsea

Fabienne's Diary - Saying goodbye always hurts, but we wish you all the best!

 Saturday, September 16, 2023

She came to our refugio as a student and fell in love with our many little dogs. One day she asked to work for me, and so Kelly came to us as a young woman, just after finishing her studies. She joined our motivated team for six years, a fixture in our group. Together we stood strong, through the many ups and downs.

Her decision to leave came as a bolt from the blue... It was hard, but we respect her choice to give her life a new direction. We all want to thank Kelly for all the care and love she has given to the many dogs, and especially the puppies, who thanks to her efforts got a loving chance at happiness!

Thank you Kelly!!! All the best to you... We will miss your enthusiasm and commitment, but wish you all the best in your future life!!!

Fabienne

Alo: the sweetest soul deserves some years of happiness to make up for everything

 Tuesday 1st August, 2023

Dogs are such loyal and loving creatures. Sometimes to the extent that they suffer for it. Like this dear Alo. Locked in a cage by his hunter boss, then thrown out because he wasn't 'good enough'. This happened not just once but several times - because this loyal and loving dog somehow found his way back to his cruel and unworthy master. Until, finally, one of our volunteers brought him to us.

Despite the dreadful treatment he's received - he's skinny and has scars all over his body - this dear soul comes to you gently, loves cuddles and is grateful for any attention. He's ten years old but very spry; what he needs is a family to love and pamper him and help him forget his past and enjoy every minute in the future. He can be left alone for several hours, is fine with other dogs - cats not such a good idea though as he will chase them. Who will make Alo's life a heaven on earth and welcome this new family member who will love you to pieces and forever.

Fabienne's Diary: Our Maurice never got to experience the warmth of a real home....

Sunday July 23, 2023

Maurice - 1

This week the whole of our Refugio was in tears. Maurice was so loved by all of us, how many times did we honor him or draw attention to him.

But today he passed away... The warm weather did not help but his time was up, he could not go on.... Many tears of sorrow flowed because this is the very last thing you do all this for, you save them to see them become happy, not that they should die in the Refugio and never find happiness. We took Maurice from the death station three years ago, many a person he loved, and vice versa. Mitch locked himself in his cage for 24 hours to show people what this feels like, but even after this we couldn't find him an owner. It was not meant to be dear Maurice, rest now softly boy... You will stay in our hearts, that's for sure! ❤️

It was barely a month ago that I wrote about our beautiful Maurice, in yet another attempt to find him the home we so badly wanted for him. It was not to be.

Ghanda: sweet and calm and deserving a much better life

Sunday July 16th, 2023

 Ghanda - 1

Ghanda

We managed to rescue her from the killing station, along with several other cats and kittens. No place for cats, dogs or any sentient being. She's adapted well to the shelter but, while it bears no comparison to a killing station, and while she is cared for a loved with us, there's nothing like your own home.

Especially when, like Ghanda, you love people and cuddles. Other cats, that's fine; she's not bothered either way. She hasn't known much happiness in her six years, and had the 'misfortune' to be born black. 'Misfortune' only because many ignorant people still associate black with evil or danger. It's nonsense but doesn't help our dear black beauties.

Who will give this sweet darling a chance? She'll reward you with love and cuddles and will be a wonderful addition to any family.

Our Blits ... living life at full tilt

 Monday 26th June, 2023

Blits - 3

Blits was dumped by her owner -which is the fate of so many dogs here in Spain. She's been with us for more than two years, waiting for that one owner who will 'see' her. No one can understand why she hasn't found a forever family yet as she's sweet and loyal. Yes she's black ... that enhances rather than takes from her beauty.

At present Blits is with a foster family who say she is fine with a big pack of dogs, good on the lead and enjoys being in the car. Despite being good with other dogs her foster mum reports that she is rather intense - because she does everything at full tilt, so she would benefit from a quiet, stable environment.

Blits is only three so plenty young enough to benefit from further guidance and consistency. With this and a loving home she will repay your love in spades.

Cuddly, adorable Jaques ... how come he is still looking?

 22nd June, 2023

This beautiful boy was with us in the Refugio for two years before moving to a foster home in Belgium, where he has settled in quickly and beautifully. His foster mum is full of praise ... he has adapted quickly to her pack, gets on well with all the other dogs and loves walks and the garden. He's good in the car too. Jacques is so happy with cuddles and attention and only asks to be liked.

This sweet and very happy boy is seven years old and although he looks as if he has Border Collie genes, he is much calmer and quieter than the breed. Whoever falls for Jacques, and who wouldn't!, will have the most delightful, loving companion for snuggles and walks.

For more information about dear Jaques, please click on his name.

Fabienne's Diary: Alarm buttons are going off everywhere!

Sunday, June 18, 2023

Everywhere you see alarm buttons going off, all the shelters, and I don't speak only for myself, but all the shelters are full, and everyone is turning - as normal, but still sad - for their own door. No help among themselves nor understanding for each other, you really feel that they consider you as a competitor while we all save lives. Thrown away lives for whom this must be terrible. No human nor animal is born to suffer, mistreated or dumped.

That is why it is so hard for any rescue person to see the death stations here bulging with discarded lives. And we all want to help, but taking them in also means shouldering every responsibility, and that simply costs a lot of money. People don't like to think about that, because for them the goal is: dump them, and get rid of them as soon as possible, their problem solved.

We are trying to change this by spaying and neutering every day, years on end, inviting schools and making young people aware of the problem here in Spain. We try to make people aware that an animal is a life, a personality, a valued member of the family, which, like a child, needs education and care, and not for a moment but forever, as long as they live. The lectures you give go in with some, others laugh at you and go back to life as before, they just ignore it because they don't care. The vacations, their freedom, but what about the dog or the cat? We hold our hearts because we are already over- and overcrowded. We know there will be mass euthanasia because they already can't follow up on what is being dumped.

Here is a video of our kittens we rescued from a death station. You can see them in the death station and then with us. We are halfway there, now to find an owner and our mission is complete. Please share and spread the word, they so deserve it!

This is the link to the video, which you can see on the Dutch blog

Big, sweet, affectionate - our beautiful Djeff is a typical Mastin

Monday 19th June, 2023

Djeff - 1

Big dog = big love. When you adopt a Mastin or a Mastin cross (like our Djeff) you know you're not adopting a Chihuahua or even a Bodeguero. So right from the start you are under no illusions that you can just pop her in a handbag or tuck her under your arm. What you do get is a big heart, tremendous loyalty and loads and loads of love. And a very beautiful soul.

Mastins were bred to guard and protect and they are rightly known for this characteristic as well as complete devotion and loyalty to their family. Our Djeff was rescued from the killing station about eighteen months ago and has been in a foster home in the Netherlands for some time. Her foster family report that she loves people and visitors but because of her size and clumsy way of playing she wouldn't be suited to a family with young children.

To find out more about our lovely Djeff and whether she is the girl for you, please click on her name. She will return your love in bucketfuls.

Maurice is a big softie!

 Wednesday 14th June, 2023

Like Staffies, people often judge Rottweilers by their appearance. They are big and strong and their aloof attitude leads people to think they are difficult dogs. Quite the opposite - a properly raised Rottie will be calm and confident and loyal and a great family dog. And despite their apparent stand-offishness, they are playful and can be downright silly - something that endears them to people who love them.

Our beautiful Maurice loves to play, as you'll see in the little video on his page. He's been with us now for two years and would blossom in a forever home. He is not a beginner's dog - and certainly knowledge of the breed would help, and experienced owners. Is that you? Would you love to give Maurice all the love he needs?

For more information about our Maurice, please click on his name.

Beautiful party in support of our four legged friends

Monday 12th June, 2023

Saturday afternoon, 10th June,  there was a beautiful party organized at Restaurante La Sierra in Mijas

It was heartwarming to see all these people again, who were there for our four-legged friends! Everyone was happy and everyone joined in full force. Also my almost 90-year-old mum was there again in Spain after 8 years, together with my sister and brother-in-law, but without Dirk and that remains enormously difficult.

We organize as much as we can to stay straight, the costs for more than 500 dogs and 200 cats are heavy to bear and few people realize how much it costs to keep all this running without help from the government. This fun afternoon raised a total of 2675 euros, which gives us another nice boost!

I thank everyone for this nice afternoon, and especially our Spanish PR team for their efforts and the organization, not to mention Restaurante La Sierra!!!

Brandon: a cuddly teddy bear

Monday 12th June, 2023

Teddy bear Brandon would love to be cuddled and petted all day long. He so longs for owners who pamper him; owners who will love and cherish him unlike his first owner who heartlessly dumped him in a killing station. Fortunately we were able to rescue him and took him to the Refugio.

Who knows why he was abandoned? He is a sweet, friendly boy who is clearly used to living in a house. He's great with other dogs though he would prefer to live with a female rather than a male. He's a typical Masin, loyal and protective of his family.

He is in seventh heaven when he's let out of his pen and can run around a bit and get loads of cuddles from our students and volunteers. He's been with us now for a bit more than a year and is now five years old, still a young dog with all of his life ahead of him.

Who will give him the home he longs for and make his tail wag permanently?

Olu: Who could resist that little face?

 Sunday June 4th, 2023

This is lovely Olu - Olu with his gorgeous eyes and distinctive markings. Why, we wonder, was this darling boy not immediately reserved by a loving family, when he came to us at about 18 months old? We just don't know. Olu is 3 years old, another loving cat who, for some mysterious reason, hasn't yet been adopted.

Somewhere there must be someone just waiting to love him. And who he will love back with all the affection and trust in his little body. Look into those lovely eyes ... can you resist? Can you really?

Beethoven: the best of both worlds

 Monday 22nd May, 2023

This is handsome Beethoven, our Cross Shepherd friend, who has been with us for too long. For nearly 2 years now. He's quite a big boy but won't grow any more because he's already 5 years old. Just think, he's only know life in a shelter since he was three years old.

Some people are put off by the bigger dogs, not that Beethoven is particularly big, indeed on the modest side for a GSD. That's probably because he's a cross breed. Super smart and intelligent, cross breed dogs are loyal and gentle as they generally have a more moderate temperament than pure bred dogs. And often tend to be healthier than pure bred dogs.

Of course every rescue dog is different; every one has their own personal history and their own way of reacting to it. You can find out more about our dear Beethoven by getting in touch with the team in the country where you are living (see the information in the orange squares below Beethoven's details).

Filio: yearning for a family to love

 Friday May 19th, 2023

Such a handsome fellow and so affectionate and cuddly. Yet he's been looking for a home for years, no one can understand why. He'd already been with another shelter before he came to us and with us, sadly, he's become one of our long stayers, having been with us for over two and a half years.

Filio had a family once, some time ago, but once they took him home they ignored him, even the children took no notice of him. Poor boy, he's longing for a proper family of his very own; he's already 12 years old- older but not that old. We would so love to find him a home where he can be happy and comfortable for the rest of his days.

Who will give dear Filio what he has craved for so many years - a loving family of his very own who will love him to pieces and be rewarded with cuddles, loyalty and adoration.

Jacques: a good family dog, needing an active, loving family

 Monday 15th May, 2023

When people think of Border Collies they often think of them as working dogs, in particular as sheepdogs, used for herding sheep. And indeed that is what they were bred to do. However, many people are not aware that they make good family dogs. They are loyal, loving dogs and one of the world's most intelligent breeds. So they are quick learners. With a Collie you also get the best of both worlds - bright and active they also love to cuddle and bond with their owners.

Being so energetic and bright they need an active family, lots of walks and lots of activities to stop them from getting bored. So an experienced owner would be a good fit; not necessarily an owner with specific experience of Collies; that would be helpful but not essential.

Our Jacques has been waiting for his family for two years. Two years too long. He's seven now, a lovely boy who is currently in foster care in the Netherlands. You can visit him there and you can also contact us to find out how to meet him and how to contact his foster family who will also tell you all about him. As you can see from the video he walks very nicely on a lead and is fine with other dogs.

For more information about our Jacques, please click on his name.

Rico - a broken dream

 12th May, 2023

We thought we had found his dream home. Sadly circumstances change and after a few weeks he had to go  when the new owners, who had taken great care of him, could no longer do so because of changed circumstances and illness. We tried so hard to find him somewhere else quickly. When that is not possible we always take our animals back to Spain; we want to make sure they are in our care and that they don't end up in a shelter or somewhere where we can't be sure they are safe.

So now Rico's back with us again. Heartbreaking for him and for us. We will try so hard to make sure he isn't with us too long and that soon he will be in a new forever home, where he will be happy for a long time. Rico is 5 years old, a cross-Malinois. We need a dream family for this dream dog - he's best suited to a family with big kids or no kids. Bless him, he needs a big garden, and a solid high fence :) and lots of  love and affection - which you will get back in spades. He's affectionate and inquisitive and gets on well with other dogs.

For more information about lovely Rico, please click on his name.

Dina ... why is it never my turn?

 Tuesday May 9th, 2023

All dogs are equal, but some are more equal than others. Or so it seems. She may not be the prettiest, the youngest or the most dainty. What is absolutely certain is that she has suffered as much as any other dog, needs love as much as any other dog, and that it is absolutely not right for any dog to spent two years and more in a shelter.

We don't really have much history - or at least there's none with her details. Just another dear soul who was dumped for whatever reason. And through no fault of her own.  Who will look at this special soul, see the longing in her eyes and open their hearts to her. Who is going to bless the day they found her and took her into their family. Could that be you? Your reward, eternal love and devotion.

For more information about our sweet girl,  Dina, please click on her name.

Long sitter of the month: Blits ... so beautiful, so unfair that she's still waiting

 Monday, May 8, 2023

Our Blits has been waiting for more than two years for that one special owner who wants to give her a chance. She is a compact size, a loyal, friendly lady but nobody seems to fall for her.

Her foster mom thinks it is best to describe her as "intense" because everything she does, she does with full devotion. She finds it harder to process too many stimuli at once, which means that a quiet, stable environment would be ideal for her. The first acquaintance with other dogs is best done in a quiet way, because sometimes she can come across as busy and this often gets a wrong reaction.

Blits walks briskly on a leash, is used to living in a large group of dogs, loves to ride in the car and is good with children! What better dog for a family. We can never understand why some dogs just get passed over, left behind. Two years is too long for Blitz or indeed for any dog or cat.  Could you start her life all over again? It will be so rewarding.

For more information about lovely Blits, please click on her name.

Beautiful, feisty Palma

Sunday May 7th, 2023

Palma is one of more than one hundred dogs we call langzitters - long stayers. Dogs who have been waiting for a forever home for more than one year. Lovely Palma is among the longest of the long stayers - she's been with us for two years this month. Too long, too long for a dog to be in a shelter, however safe it is here, no matter that her tummy is full and that she is treated kindly - nothing beats your own family.

She did have an owner once, but he gave up on her and took her to the killing station. That's how she came to us. She's a strong, middle sized dog with a strong character who has had to stand up for herself. Nevertheless she is sweet and playful as well as being beautiful.

Four year old Palma is friendly and gets on with other dogs, but would thrive best being in a family with just one other dog, or being the only dog herself. With the right owner, and some clear direction, beautiful Palma would make the perfect family dog.

For more information about our Palma, please click on her name.

Palma is a friendly dog, but she does have a strong character. An experienced owner, who can and wants to steer her in the right direction consistently, but patiently, is what she needs now! She usually gets along well with other dogs, but she is a feisty aunt, so she is best placed with just one other dog or alone.

Hang Hang: a hurt soul

 Friday May 5th, 2023

Poor little lost soul

Who can tell who suffers most, those poor mistreated and abused dogs wandering alone in the streets and the Campo. Or those who have known the love of a family and come to us lost, bewildered and uncomprehending. What happened? Where is their boss, the children, their home? It's not a competition, any suffering is unacceptable. They have done nothing to deserve it, nothing at all. Yet here they are.

Hang Hang was a dog who grew up in a family with children, until circumstances meant they had to say goodbye to their faithful friends. He had a hard time, sad, angry and wary. He's had to slowly learn to trust us. He's staying with a foster family now, which is better for him than the shelter. They are working on him and he has settled with the large pack of dogs in the house though he still has problems with human touch.

However, he is getting there, poor hurt soul that he is. You will see from the video that he is improving and even seeking cuddles from the right person. What he needs to heal him is a family to love him, a family who will stay by his side, understand his hurt and make it better. Who will help him become once again the little dog he was meant to be, a lively, happy, funny clown. A typical Bodeguero.

For more information about sad Hang Hang, please click on his name.

Lore: loyal, friendly and needs to get out of the shelter!

4th May, 2023

Sunday morning and we received a call from an unknown Spanish phone number. That usually only means one thing. "I just found a dog, she was walking down the highway and just missed being run over. Can I take her to you?" How many times have we heard that one!!!  And there she was, in all her glory. A big, strong lady, but sweet and sympathetic like no other! She immediately gave us a lick, a friendly push with her head, asking to be cuddled.

Don't be put off by the breed - there are a lot of misconceptions about Staffies and American Bulls. The American Bull Staffie, like Lore, is a hybrid cross between the American Bulldog and the American Staffordshire Terrier. Being more like the Staffie in appearance. A loyal, people loving dog and a great family dog. The breed is patient with children and will go out of its way to protect them.

Lore is a nice, cozy dog, super affectionate and friendly with people and also good with other dogs. She doesn't let herself be fooled, but she doesn't look for trouble herself either. She is a calm, stable dog, looking for a family that will welcome her with open arms! She really needs you, we love her but she's been in our shelter for coming up for two years. She needs her own home.

For more information about our lovely Lore, please click on her name

Read more about Lore's breed here.

Remembering Dirk ....

Wednesday 3rd May, 2023

This is a post I hoped I'd never have to write. Because it means that dear, beloved Dirk is no longer with us. His loss is incalculable - primarily for Fabienne, but there are so many, so many people all over the world who loved and valued him and who will miss hims so much. To say nothing of his beloved dogs and cats at the Refugio.

I have vivid memories of the first time I met him. It was the day of the flood and landslide. I had arrived the evening before for my first visit. That night there was a massive storm and torrential rain, the sky electric blue with lightning, the thunder deafening. Yet I woke the next morning to bright sunshine and clear skies. I had no idea of the devastation the storm had caused. I was staying on the other side of La Cala and had no idea how to get to the Refugio, eventually I managed to get someone to call a taxi.

Dropped off near the road I crossed the car parking area. There were cars, but no people. I rang the bell. Nothing happened (later I discovered the storm had knocked out the electrics). Some minutes later another car drew up and Dirk stepped out. I had never met him but recognised him from the website. We introduced ourselves and he let me in. Only then did I see the chaos and the damage - the place was knee deep in mud, generators were humming, people were busy trying to restore some order. I have written about it elsewhere, but suffice to say that it was devastating - dogs lost, food, medicine, blankets and supplies ruined. A volunteer put a sluice in my hand and I got stuck in like everyone else. Dirk, Fabienne and Ton, all the permanent staff and the volunteers  worked tirelessly throughout the day and in the days that followed.

That was in May 2011. I returned in October, and the following year, and every year until the pandemic struck. Until finally I could go back. My memories of Dirk at the Refugio are like clear snapshots ... Dirk sorting out a problem with supplies ... building a wall ... getting stuck in with any physical work needed ... filling innumerable water canisters in the dreadful days when the well ran dry ... taking photos of the new arrivals. Dirk constructing and managing the website in the office ... talking to the dogs ... always talking to the dogs .... thinking up outrageous, wonderfully inventive names for them. And on occasion shooing them out of the office when the cheeky ones managed to get past or jump the fence.

After several visits Fabienne and Dirk became friends and I had the great privilege of staying with them and their dog family - usually 24+ including their own beloveds and a shifting family of fosters. I loved being there and have even more memories of Dirk at home. Dirk after a long day heading for the fridge offering me beer or wine ... sitting outside with Fabienne surrounded by the dogs while he put the world to rights, he loved talking politics and was always interested in what was going on in the UK. Dirk at his computer  on the office side of the big living room working on the website or admin for the Refugio. Dirk waiting to pick me up at the airport when I came in on an evening flight. Dirk cooking industrial quantities of spaghetti which was shared with the dog children of course.

All my memories are of a kind, hardworking, loving, generous and hospitable man. He wasn't a saint, who is? He had his moments, as we all do. Those moments too form part of my memories of this beloved husband, friend and saviour of animals. My heart goes out to Fabienne. And my thoughts are also with everyone else who knew and loved this exceptional man. I will miss you Dirk - rest in peace, I'm sure you are surrounded with grateful dogs and cats in heaven as you were on earth, including your beloved Tineke.

Taking a brief rest during clean up operations, during yet another flood.

With his beloved Tineke, who always had her very own plate of food and napkin.

With Fabienne, promoting ACE-Shin and the Refugio. Always in it together.

In the office at El Chapparel, with companions.

Dirk will live on forever in the hearts and memories of many. Together with Fabienne, they went through the storm of rescue for 23 years. Now he may rest and watch from the other side how their life's work is lovingly continued by many hands.

RIP Dirk +

In remembrance of Dirk, please no flowers or wreaths. His wish was a donation to the dogs and cats of "his" ACE|SHIN, where he has fought so hard for all these years: ES74 0081 0619 5800 0145 7846 with reference Farewell Dirk or https://ace-charity.org/condoleances-dirk/

Farewell to our dear Dirk....

Thursday, April 20, 2023

Our Dirk, support and companionThursday, April 20, 2023 and husband of Fabienne, animal lover in heart and soul, bon vivant, rock, friend, ACE|SHIN treasurer, and so much more ... passed away today 20-04-2023....

How many four-legged friends will be waiting for him at the rainbow bridge, for together with his Fabienne they dedicated more than half of their married years to saving tens of thousands of four-legged friends.

Until the very end, Dirk was concerned about their refugio, its future, and from one of his roles as treasurer, he tried to follow up each transaction or donation in the best and most personal way possible.

Therefore, in his honor, we offer the opportunity through our website, to leave a verbal and/or financial paw print.  https://ace-charity.org/condoleances-dirk/

RIP Dirk!!! You are already missed. The world lost an angel today and heaven has one more.

The ACE|SHIN Team.
