Fabienne's diary: We don't win every battle, ...

Friday, May 29, 2020

It was a sad week. We were very busy, but that's okay and we are used to that, but the seven puppies that were in a cage in front of the Refugio, bone thin and full of festering wounds, full of ticks and fleas - all were seriously ill and all died, one by one.

As if that was not enough, even more puppies had to die, and we are all feeling bitter. We don't know who dropped off these new puppies in front of our gate, but they knew what was going on with them and we knew nothing. Everything was done to save them until the vet said they couldn't be saved anymore. This fight we have also lost.

Now everything is being done to keep our other puppies safe and healthy, but also the 13 puppies that were in a box at Isabelleke were all found to be seriously ill. Many of them have pneumonia, and are also in the clinic.

We never give up, never, but how hard it is to be confronted with the willful atrocity of people again and again. Who could do this to us, knowing that we are a Refugio, sheltering lives that are vulnerable - they throw them in the trash, or in a dirty smelly box at our door. We want to save what we can save and everything is put on the line to achieve that.  And then comes the reality that this battle cannot always be won.

It is hard and always incomprehensible when young lives slip away from you ...
