Fabienne's diary: Yara, a Podencootje in a serious condition

Friday, June 19, 2020

One of the next suckers we gave priority to was Yara. A living skeleton, her whole body covered with
open wounds and a leg she couldn't stand on anymore. She sat there with her fellow cellmate, ... So
skinny, so skinny, you can see right through that body. Her skin is also in bad shape.

She shivers and looks at you, but she thinks she is dreaming. When we treated her with softness,
that first touch of a person who did not hurt, also felt scary. You saw her think in this way, she let
everything happen, as long as we didn't hit her or kick. Her head automatically went into fear
position.  God what has this animal experienced. She undoubtedly has high Leishmania, that was
never taken care of;  she is emaciated, her legs are just full of holes, painful holes. She was
certainly one of the most in need.

When we put her down with us yesterday and she saw a fresh bowl of water, I'll never forget that
moment. She couldn't believe it, just kept looking at it, and then at us, and then at that bowl of water
and then to us. Yes, a container of fresh, clean water. The containers of water there were aged, dirty
automatic containers that were green from the algae and that had not worked properly for a long time,
or had been torn off the wall and were rarely changed - the water, if you can call that water, was filthy.
Really indescribable.

Yara will now first be taken care of by the vet, her tests will be done and if her blood values are good,
then we will treat her. She has a long way to go. Fingers crossed she can make it.

For more information about Yara please click on her name.
