It really exists ... love at first sight! Marcos is proof of that. And what a proof!
Also it's true tat you can find happiness through the Internet, Facebook in our case.
How did it go? Well, very simple and very fast actually.
Somewhere in the middle October 2015 a friend sent me a photo of a dog that was being offered by ACE for adoption. She put my name under his picture with the question - didn't he look very much like our Tara? Now we had just had to let Tara go in June 2015 because she became very ill. We were inconsolable. And above all certain that we would never have another dog because the loss is really unbearable.
But there he was .... Marcos! According to the description written by his pictures he was a sweet and playful dog. He looks so like Tara and was looking for someone to give him love and a warm home. What else could we do? We could not just let him remain in the shelter there in Spain. We could not get him out of our hearts .... and so I contacted ACE to see if Marcos could be ours.
We went for it! First, we were quite uncertain as to whether we had made the right choice. Or if we were taking him into our house for all the wrong reasons, or if it was unfair to him to bring him to Amsterdam, mainly to replace Tara. The interview with the ACE volunteer who came along to meet us in advance and to see where Marcos would be living only confirmed that it was the right choice. And fortunately we came through the "screening" and Marcos was flown to Amsterdam on November 13, 2015.
November 13, 2015 .... a day like any other day? Well, no! For us it was the most exciting ever November 13 .... Not because it was Friday the 13th, but because we finally met with Marcos ... What an exciting time it was ... My stomach was turning over about every couple seconds - you know that feeling probably ... that tension of uncertainty. Would he like us? How would he react to us? What if we don't like him? What if ... what if ...
My sister went with me to the airport to wait for Marcos because I could not bear to go on my own.
There were two girls who were also waiting for their dog from Malaga and I saw in their eyes that they also thought it was super exciting .. you saw it clearly.
And then came the moment of truth.
The box with the two dogs was brought out through the arrival doors at the airport by a young family. And there he was ... red-haired, small and especially anxious in that oversized box with a black puppy who was bigger than he was, even though Marcos is six.
My Marcos !!!
He was finally here!
Carefully we took him out of the box .. The tension was gone ... LOVE! Luck! Joy! came in its place.
With tears in my eyes I grabbed him and gave him a treat and a hug and we got to know each other ... There may have been some caution, both of us insecure and afraid of how it would turn out but all the worry was for nothing. Love at first sight. We were immediately good buddies!
Our adventure started well and continues daily.
We walk, cuddle, play and enjoy every day ...though we probably spoil him a bit too much ... he has so many toys that he can start a toy shop. But when you see how happy he is when he gets a new toy ... I would like to give him something new every day to play with. There is a small problem with this toy store, because it does not all fit in the basket with Marcos. But what the hell .. as long as he is happy, toys continues to come;)
In adopting Marcos we have made the best decision. So much love, happiness, pleasure and joy that he brings with him, we would not have wanted to miss any of it!
What I really want to say is that providing a safe, warm and loving home to a dog from a shelter means a bright future for both of you. And to be honest .... you get a lot more love in return than you ever dreamed!
We love Marcos and Marcos loves us!
