How could anyone do this!
Thrown out just when she most needs love and care!
But she got old. Worse, she became blind. She was afraid to go outside on her own, so she sometimes had accidents inside. She suffered too from painful, mammary gland tumours due to all the puppies she'd brought into the world. Her bosses left them untreated though they were very painful.
Just when she needed them the most. Just when you'd expect her family to look after her, after all she had done for them, they abandoned her. They did worse than abandon her. They took her to the killing station of Los Barrios.
Instead of cherishing her, they treated her like an old rag to be thrown away. We got a call from one of our volunteers. She was crying and upset. She couldn't believe anyone could be so wicked - to throw out a venerable dog just because she got old and had old-age problems.
We changed her name to Hera. A new name for a new life. She is still with us - she eats well and takes a little stroll from time to time. The person who adopts her will need to be aware of her ailments and accept them. We're sure there's someone out there, a hero or a heroine, who will make her happy for her last months, weeks or even days.
This is what we wish for her. Happiness and respect and love in a warm family, for however long she has. Is that you? Could you help a sweet 18-year old who didn't deserve such dreadful treatment in her old age. Could you open your heart to her? We hope so much there is someone out there for little Hera.
Hera when she first came to us.
Hera - all she needs is love.
