Three months in prison in Gran Canaria for animal abuse ...

Friday, August 3, 2018

A judge in Las Palmas on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria has decided that the two men found guilty of animal cruelty on the island of Lanzarote have to go to jail for three months. It concerns two brothers who in 2016 had beaten a dog called "King" so that it was almost dead. Fortunately, veterinarians were able to save the dog.

The judge of the Provincial Court in Las Palmas has decided that the two brothers Alberto and Sergio Hernández Santos must go to jail for three months and a day. At a first judgment there was a prison sentence but the animal traffickers did not have serve these. However, in a second lawsuit the judge decided otherwise.

This court decision was taken partly because the brothers had entered into an agreement with the law by confessing that they had mistreated the dog in order to obtain a lower prison sentence with the hope that they would not have to serve their sentence. The judge decided, however, that in view of the seriousness of the case, the brothers have to be locked up behind bars for three months and one day , the minimum punishment in this case.

The case came to a head when, on February 28, 2016, a couple saw that two men were beating, kicking and severely abusing a dog; they called the police who arrested the men. The heavily battered but still living dog was found in the municipality of Haría on the island of Lanzarote near the volcano mountain, Corona.

The dog was taken to a veterinarian at the Protectora de Animales y Plantas Sara shelter who were able to save the dog's life thanks to fast action. This dog was later given the name King.
