Fabienne's Diary: Mara, 11 years old, 70% blind, and with diabetes. Delivered to our gate ...

The life stories of each of us are always unique, as is that of this little dork ...

A young man stood at the door. He wanted to talk to me personally, a neat boy of about 18.  Neatly and very politely, he started to tell me that since COVID his parents were getting all their (grand) children back home, they were now with seven in a tiny apartment. All the children and grandchildren were now all living off their parents' pension. Each of them had lost his or her job, then their cars, then their furniture, and finally their place of residence. None of them was entitled to any allowance anymore, that had all disappeared after 1 year.

Often these people were paid very badly, or through the black economy; they were exploited, like so many others. It is often too sad for words here, ... COVID had eaten their work, their rented apartments, their whole lives, they had nothing more, ... Just each other and their sick dog.

But their dog that they had had for so long became ill, and since the (grand) children themselves had hardly any food, they had to give up their diabetic, sick dog. The boy had taken her to a local vet, asking if maybe he wanted to help for free. The diagnosis was that she is almost blind, and has diabetes. But apart from a quote for the fee and and my number, he hadn't received anything. "She will help you, otherwise the killing station ..."

Tears ran down his cheeks. He was very happy that we wanted to take her in, because she had never received her treatment, they could not afford it. Please, can you treat her... with the vet's quote in his hands. That's how Mara came into our lives.

Another sad story but what we want to change into a happy ending, already for the dog's sake. Mara is sitting here now, dejected, and without purpose or understanding. She doesn't know what is happening to her. From a busy family to a lonely cage. And then what? If only we could explain to her how we are going to tackle it, but now she is going through a tunnel without light. We hope to find another owner who can and will bear these costs. It could be what will bring some light into her sad soul.
