ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL: Our Sien, survived for two whole years by eating oranges.

Wednesday 7th December, 2022

Do you remember our Sien. We gave him this name because it is the Dutch word for Orange. Because this poor little dog had been abandoned in a walled garden, completely enclosed with no way out. And no food or drink. The resourceful fellow kept himself alive for two whole years - by eating the oranges that fell from the tree in the garden. How he survived is a mystery, as is the determination he had to stay alive.

The good news is that this sweet boy has now been adopted and at last he has love and he has the freedom to run, which he is obviously enjoying. His adopter, Eric, says ...

"We put Sien on a long lead, with a piece of wood at the end. Every time he comes back to Sabine he gets a reward, in the hope that eventually he will come back without the need for a reward to encourage him. "

Trapped in an orchard. No way out!

ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL: Dumped and Discarded ... Steven and Victoria

Tuesday 6th December, 2022

Sweet Steven, found wandering all alone in someone’s garden but finally safe in the Refugio. Fabienne described him as ‘the apple of our eye’. That’s so true. I loved him when I met him – everyone loved this elegant and charming fellow and he loves them. Such an affectionate boy. Dogs are crazy about him. He’s not too happy about cats, though, but nobody’s perfect. Steven was in the Refugio for a long time. He made everyone happy but he’s just longed to have a family of his own.  And his dream and his wish came true and he found his forever home.

Beautiful Victoria – a lifesaver and heroine of the hour. When one of the little puppies in or care was suffering from parvo he needed a blood transfusion to save his little life. We needed a healthy dog who could be a donor. Fabienne immediately thought of Victoria. Had Victoria been able to speak, if she’d been asked, she’d have said ‘yes’. Because when lovely Victoria was rescued she was expecting fifteen puppies. Sadly they all died. .  So, had she been asked, she would definitely have wanted to save the life of this little puppy.

And she did. And at last, at last! Victoria got her golden basket. Like Steven, she so deserved it.

Anniversary Special: 'The Halt and the Lame'* ... every single one is precious

 Monday 5th December, 2022

The following post was, in essence, taken from a post dated July 2012. I don't have the stories of all of the dogs ... but all to my knowledge were adopted. I particularly remember Golfito, whom I met with his new family on one of the ACE days.

Every single dog saved by A.C.E. is a soul worth saving. Each one deserving of a happy future, full of love, with a warm basket and an adoring family.

Lame, blind, deaf, incontinent, traumatised – these and other conditions are never seen as reasons to reject or euthanize. They are seen as a challenge and a reason to strive by every means possible to heal, cure or, where that’s not possible, to find a way round the problem.

And our foster families and our adopting families have hearts as big as the world. They open them to all our dogs, not simply the young and beautiful, but to the old and physically challenged – to the halt and the lame.

So – here are just a few of the ‘special needs’ dogs that were in our care in 2012. All gorgeous darlings who were waiting for that special family who would wipe away their dreadful memories and show them how wonderful and kind humans can be.

If anyone reading this remembers these lovely souls, maybe you even adopted one of them, I'll be happy to put an update on the blog.

Countdown to the anniversary ...

Sunday 4th December, 2022

Enzio - my first sponsor dog: so frightened of everything and everybody.

It's a time to celebrate and remember. So many good memories. So many almost insurmountable difficulties and challenges that were, nevertheless, faced and overcome.

Above all, our four leggeds. The ones we saved. The ones we lost. We will never forget them. Any of them. In the week leading up to the anniversary I will go back as far as I can (I first discovered the Refugio about 12 or 13 years ago). This blog started a bit later.

Every single dog or cat is special. The fact that some stick in your mind, or whose stories particularly touched you, doesn't take from any of the others. Nor from those poor darlings we couldn't save nor whose stories we never knew. These posts are dedicated to them too. Especially to them, those who have no name.

Enzio now Vasco: living like a king with his siblings in Utrecht.

Monday 24th October 2022

She was hiding away in a corner of the car, but we didn't know she had been put there, much less who she actually was. A black head came squealing, and giving her back was really not an option. She is clearly a wonderful dog and since she has been with us she is developing as a strong, sweet, but feisty and energetic lady who craves human attention and cuddling!

Delta is a social dog who loves to play games and knows what she wants. She needs an owner who is strong in his/her shoes, and puts her on the right correct path so that her happiness can finally begin. Delta is a great people pleaser, needs exercise and discipline, a garden, and a good family or owner. She is tremendously loyal, affectionate and eager to learn.

Who will give this beautiful black lady what she needs?

Why we should all love Heinrich Zimmermann.

Saturday 8th October, 2022

I have to admit, I had never even heard of him. Shame on me, because I and many others have good reason to thank him and to be grateful. For it was Heinrich Zimmermann who, on March 24th 1925, originated World Animal Day at the Sports Palace in Berlin. His aim, to promote animal rights and welfare throughout the world. The first World Animal Day was meant to be held on October 4th, the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecology. Apparently the Sports Palace wasn't available on that date, but the official date of World Animal Day was moved to October 4th in 1929. After years of hard work, his proposal to have October 4th recognised was accepted unanimously at the Congress of International Animal Protection, held in Florence in 1931.

Heinrich Zimmermann was a cynologist, a term sometimes used to describe someone who takes a serious, zoological approach to the study of dogs and canine subjects. A Polish writer and publisher, Zimmermann moved to Germany to organise the first event, and also promoted it through his magazine Mens und Hund/Man and Dog. He was also involved in cat protection. However, in 1933, when the Nazis came to power, they were determined to purge the membership archive of his Berlin Cats Protection organisation because there were Jewish members. Zimmermann was too quick for them and destroyed all the files before they could see them. As a result the society was banned and Zimmermann forced to return to Poland. He was killed in 1942, either in the Krakow Ghetto or deported and killed in the nearby Auschwitz concentration camp.

It's nearly 100 years since Heinrich Zimmermann conceived and inaugurated Wold Animal Day - his name may be mostly forgotten and unknown, but his vision and his work lives on. We owe him an immense  vote of thanks.

Vyron's adopter tells his story ...

Monday 26th September, 2022

Here's a little story about Vyron. After our dog died, we said to each other, we won't take another dog. Secretly, after a while we had both started looking at the shelters anyway. Okay, after hubby's holiday, we will seriously look at a Malinois

Yes and then we saw Vyron's post go by. We looked at each other, this is going to be our Malinois.

After an introductory meeting, I was converted. It was that we already had an appointment scheduled, otherwise I would have taken him straight away.

Viron is doing well, listens well and gets many compliments. We say that this is not to our credit but that of the previous adopter. He is very careful around the grandchildren.

When it's nice weather, Viron sits by the fence because he is friends with the neighbour ( dog biscuit).

During walks he walks along quietly hardly looks at other dogs. If Viron sees a cat, yes he still wants to chase it. We then try to distract him so he walks with us. Sometimes this goes well, other times he has cauliflowers in his ears.

Yes Viron is sweet, loves cuddles and is watchful!

Long sitter of the month: Mollie

Saturday, September 10, 2022

Mollie is a tough lady, she is a very good character if properly supervised, because she sometimes wants to be boisterous and fierce, out of enthusiasm. She was in the killing station together with a mastin. Both are now rescued and doing well, they are very sweet dogs who are social.

Mollie should go to people who know the breed and can guide and educate her well, being a Stafford. She is very pleasant with people, super friendly, a dog that with a good responsible owner will become a great companion.

With whom can Mollie finally come home?

For more information about dear Mollie, please click on her name.

We wish you a nice new week from our four-legged friends and us.

Fabienne's diary :Our Pico, Pici and Picu have been waiting for more than a year for their golden basket.

 Saturday 10 September 2022

The world has been turned upside down this time, because normally it is not the mum who goes home first, but the kittens. This was not the case for Pica; her 3 kittens Pico, Pici and Picuhave been staying in our refugio from day 1, living inside with other kittens, but their mum went home a long time ago. We would like to bring these brothers and their sister to your attention!

They are sweet and affectionate, happy and good kittens who should be welcome somewhere, forever. Each of them is used to living in a small space, but we would so love to see them roaming around somewhere, just being part of a family. It is always heartbreaking to see them grow up in a shelter, no animal belongs here, but sometimes life takes you where you certainly don't want to be.

That is why I am asking to put our shoulders to the wheel for these three lives, their worlds. They are young, beautiful kittens! Who will open his heart to one of them?

On 1 and 2 October Tony Knight is coming to the Netherlands for a basic Dog Listening course.

Tuesday 6th September, 2022

After 2 Corona years we can finally organise the previously planned training weekend with Tony Knight! On October 1 and 2 he will come to The Netherlands for a basic Dog Listening course.

Tony Knight (tonyknightdoglistener.com) has developed the method Amichien Bonding (AB) where he teaches you to understand the natural behaviour of your dog. His method does not require any tricks or tools; he gives tools that are easy to integrate into your daily interactions with your dog. You can think of feeding, walking on the lead etc.

This course is anything but boring; Tony can tell a good story and give great examples. Does your dog pull on the lead? Does your dog bark up the street? Tony will show you why your dog does this and how you can tackle it. If you do not have a dog, it is also recommended. The bond with your dog will become even stronger if you learn to understand his language better.

The course is in English but with a basic knowledge of English it is easy to follow.

When: Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 October 2022 (Saturday morning theory,Saturday afternoon practice part 1, Sunday morning practice part 2)

Where: Emmer Compascuum (Drenthe)

Included: half-day theory, 2 half-days practice, reception with coffee and tea on both days and lunch on Saturday

Price: 137 euro per person, or 209 euro per couple. (Part of the proceeds will go to ACE)

Because of the peace for the dogs, there is a limited number of places. Will you join us? Sign up quickly by sending an email to: vrijwilligers.nederland@ace-charity.org

Fabienne's Diary: Back with her hunter, and what now?

 Monday 5th September 2022

We were all stunned when our volunteer came to us in tears because Luna had to go back with the hunters. Our whole team sympathised, also our young people, I felt so sorry for them, we went into a sleepless night. I thought of all kinds of scenarios, and finally I took the plunge and went to talk to the hunter. I told him very calmly that Luna was very special to our volunteer, and so on and so forth. At first the conversation was a bit, shall we say, heated, unpleasant, until I asked him if we could not buy the dog. And yes, that was a bull's-eye: money, suddenly that was interesting. He asked for at least 1000 euros, as if it was nothing. Pfff, what do you do then? A lot of back and forth followed. I asked him to give me some time and then I would call him back.

It could be anything, I wanted to save Luna, but how? It was pure blackmail and really scandalous and so much more. Many people will certainly not understand this, and I too would prefer not to go along with these dirty practices, but Luna was worth much more to us than anything else. I first shared the story with our volunteers in the refugio, and thanks to them and some friends, we managed to collect 1000 euros in no time, after which I phoned the hunter and asked him where we could meet and pick up Luna. He would meet us at a venta at 5pm and I had to come alone with our volunteer.

No sooner said than done: at 5 pm, 1000 euros were handed over to the hunter and we received Luna in our hands. It is what it is, but we had no choice, they were in control. What counts now is that we have made a world of difference for this 7 year old breeding machine, a Podenco, a mother from a dark shed who never saw daylight when she was not hunting, or when she gave birth to her babies. Now she goes through life as Luna, she is somewhere HOME, in a way that we, animal lovers, want so much and it is very normal for us. We have arranged and signed all the papers and they will leave our volunteer alone, and Luna is now officially his dog!

We want to thank everyone for their contribution, many little ones made 1 big one, and saved Luna's world!!! An unreal story, but unfortunately the tragic reality.

Fabienne's Diary: The battle for Luna, a Podenco female in distress.

Sunday, September 4, 2022

It is a story to cry about, but unfortunately it is the reality. A few weeks ago one of our volunteers saved a skinny Podenco who had followed him to the car and got in without thinking. She had found her own place after having had a hell of a life with a hunter.

Nobody came to ask for her, even though the volunteer had searched everywhere or asked if anyone had lost their dog. Thus began her life with our volunteer, who gave his heart to her and vice versa. He adopted her, and her new life could now begin. But that didn't take the hunters into account.

One day, the volunteer was out walking his two dogs and saw in the distance a group of hunters with their children and grandchildren standing around something. As he approached, he saw to his horror that there was a bunny in a wire cage with about 30 Podencos around it, which they were setting against the defenceless bunny in the wire cage. The parents, children and grandchildren roused the dogs, kicked the cage to make the dogs even fiercer, until the moment they lifted the wire cage and let the Podencos do their business on the defenceless bunny, which was torn into a thousand pieces. Everyone cheered with joy and life went on as if it was the most normal thing in the world. Our volunteer was in shock, it was horrible.

When our volunteer and his friend wanted to pass by, one of the hunters suddenly approached him, and at the same moment, his new Podencote stood right behind him and started shivering like a reed. The hunter said to him: this is my dog! Whereupon the volunteer said that he had found her a month and a half ago, and had kept her with him because she was so skinny and underfed. "It is my dog, and since she has run away I will teach her a lesson, and do you know what that means?" he said to our volunteer. The man looked at him, then continued, "She will learn to play the piano, I guarantee it! We'll hang her from a tree and leave her just above the ground so she has to strum like she's playing the piano until she's dead, that's what we'll do to her! Give me that rotten dog here!!!"

At this the volunteer started walking and they managed to escape the madman, but the next problem came a few days later. When he was walking with his two dogs, he found himself in the middle of the forest again face to face with the same hunter, who this time had come with a friend to take the Podenco away, "It is my dog and I am going to teach him to play the piano". Our volunteer was lucky to escape the hunters again but he could not take any more risks.

He cried tears of sorrow but did not dare to keep his Luna with him, he feared for her life. He asked if we could help, so I immediately went to work and found a foster family. Everything was done to bring her there the next day and make her safe. And then the thing happened that I was so afraid of, knowing hunters and their way of thinking and acting. Our volunteer went for a walk with his dogs in the early evening, and when he returned, he was trapped, and there was a big discussion between the hunters, our volunteer and the police, because the hunter had the documents to prove that it was his dog. The hunter yanked Luna out of the car and away he went, our volunteer had lost her, she was back with the hunter.

And now, what can we do, it will not let us go, we will not leave it at that.

Fabienne's diary: two little dogs thrown out of the car "en plein public".

Thursday 1st September, 2022

It was still very hot that evening in Seville. People were sitting on a terrace when suddenly a van drove by, opened the door and two little dogs flew through the air and away it went with squealing tyres. The bystanders were looking on in amazement and did not understand what they had just seen. The two defenceless dogs rolled back and forth and were perplexed, frightened, fleeing to every corner. Fortunately, people were quick to take them in and soothe and comfort them, but the damage had been done.

And now, who was going to take them to heart? That, of course, was another matter. That was us, we took them in immediately and they are two very sweet and good little dogs that clearly came from a home. The first few days they were very upset but today they are doing a little better, they can be placed separately or together, but in any case they have to leave together so that none of them is left behind and they can come home together, albeit separately. Both dogs are little sweethearts and deserve only the best!

Tears of joy!

 Thursday 25th August 2022

Source" Yahoo!Sports

Anyone who has ever owned a dog, or even been around dogs for any length of time, will be familiar with their behaviour when their owner returns after being away ... whether for a very short time, for several hours or indeed for days or weeks. Jumping up, running round in excited circles, licking, crying - all of these and more. And now a small study has found that dogs can actually cry tears of joy when their owner returns.

While dogs are known to cry to keep their tear ducts clean, tears had not previously been linked to an emotional response. Takefumi Kikusui, one of the authors of this Japanese study, said they had never heard of dogs crying in joyful situations. During the experiment the researchers also studied whether a dog's tears affected their owners. They discovered that a dog's gaze stimulates the production of oxytocin, which brought out the desire to nurture and protect their pet.

Of course this was only a very small study, involving 22 dogs and there has been plenty of criticism by other scientists, seeking to disprove it. While scientific study is essential for us to understand what goes on both in our world and in an animals world, anyone who knows and loves dogs will be in no doubt about their emotional response to us and to varying situations, tears or no tears. My little three legged, Teddy, goes bananas when I come home, even if I have only gone down to the shop, which is 5 minutes away.

Although I have no objective knowledge, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this behaviour is even more marked in rescue dogs. After all, they have either been mistreated, or dumped, they have been cared for in a shelter, longing for a golden basket but never sure if they will be lucky. Having once found a new forever family, they become attached to their new owner or owners, though this may take a long time, depending on the earlier trauma they have suffered.  Consequently their fear of being abandoned once again can never be far away.

I remember reading a story about an adopted Ace dog, who hadn't been very long in his new forever home. The first time they took him out in the car he changed. He'd been a happy cheerful dog who was adopting well to his new home; now he became sad and fearful, cowering in the car, shivering and unhappy during the visit. Back in the car, he remained quiet and upset. And then .. the car turned into the driveway of his new home. He perked up, ears pricked, gazing out the window at the house. Out of the car he became the happy dog they had come to know. Perhaps in his sad little mind he had imagined that he was being dumped again. But no .. he was home again. He was safe.

Fabienne's Diary: The sad turn of events in Feliz' life.

 Wednesday, 24 August 2022

This beautiful Labrador lady, with a heart of gold, a silly sparrow, a playful companion and a wonderful four-legged friend, she has it all, our Feliz! But all that was not enough to make her happy for life, she had to go away urgently, very urgently, and why? Mum was living here on the Costa del Sol with the 3 dogs and 3 children, but dad was working in Saudi Arabia. One day the family had to move to faraway places and that is how it goes. Feliz went to a friend, and from the friend to another friend. However, Feliz was very sad and mournful at first, because suddenly her family had gone up in smoke, and now we are allowed to solve it.

It is now slowly getting better with this sweetheart, a Labrador in heart and soul. Playful, fond of children but also of her owner, of her whole family. Feliz is social with other dogs, but a garden is certainly required for this lively Labrador. She is a sweetheart, and certainly for the Labrador lovers a winner!

Saturday 24 September - MINI ACE DAY - Ugchelen & Sunday 25 September - MINI SHIN DAY - Overijse

Wednesday 17th August, 2022

Finally the time has come. After 2 years it is back. The ACE & SHIN day. Although in a mini form with a

dog walk as the main programme, but in the presence of Fabienne and some "Spanish" employees.

DID YOU KNOW...that every dog that comes into our Refugio first spends a month in our quarantine area?

Wednesday 17th August 2022

Here in Spain dogs are rarely vaccinated. By keeping the new dogs in quarantine for a month, we avoid the possibility that sick newcomers infect our other dogs. During that month the new dogs receive medical care and their vaccines, and we can also observe their behaviour. In this quarantine section, hygiene rules are followed very strictly. Visitors are not allowed, and the carers have to disinfect themselves thoroughly when leaving.

Only after the end of that month will the dogs be placed for adoption. In addition to the dogs for adoption on our website, there are also a lot of dogs 'behind the scenes' in quarantine.

Fabienne's weekly overview ...

 Sunday 14 august 2022

What a week full of emotions of sadness, happy moments, incomprehension and lots of warmth...

The temperatures are unbearable...over 40°... Our dogs and kittens are losing weight...it is poignant... If only we had the possibility to do things differently, but we have to make do with what we have...

The clinic is full of patients...

Scotty is still very critical and we had to let go our Pashaatje...

The emotions flared up but also the frustrations that this could happen...

The approved welfare law is already being challenged by those who want to change it....

Viva EspaΓ±a!

But there are also many positive events such as volunteer Christophe, who walked the Death March for the benefit of our four-legged friends and collected money for it, and we hold on to this,...

We and our dogs and kittens wish everyone a wonderful new week!

*Need for wet food!

 Wednesday 17 August 2022

In the Refugio there is currently a great shortage of wet food for our dogs and cats! This is because the dogs and cats come in extremely neglected and then they get tinned food together with the kibble. In the Refugio we also have an enormously increased number of cats and and also in the colonies we maintain.

The Refugio has made an appeal for donations of wet food, or to collect money so that we can buy this ourselves in Spain.

Who can help us by making a donation? You can donate via:

* A transfer to our bank account: ES74 0081 0619 5800 0145 7846 in the name of Animal Care Espana Dogs In Need.

* Through our website with Ideal/Bancontact/Credit card: https://ace-charity.org/natvoeractie

OR

Donate through ACE Netherlands

ACE Netherlands is an ANBI, so your donation is tax deductible (if you donate a minimum of EUR 60.00 per year, or donate periodically). ACE Netherlands transfers all gifts and donations directly to ACE|SHIN so you can be assured that your donation will go to the right place!

Payment link ACE Netherlands (reusable): https://ace-charity.org/anbi-donatie

Reference: wet food action

Choose your own amount or donate for example x amount of cans of wet food:

5 tins of food a EUR 3,- = EUR 15,00

10 tins of food a EUR 3,- = EUR 30,00

20 tins of food a EUR 3,- = EUR 60,00

On behalf of our four-legged friends THANK YOU!

'DEATH MARCH' FOR OUR FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS

Saturday 6 august 2022

Hey all,

As you all know, I have been the coordinator of transport and collections for ACE Shin (Spanish dogs in need) for a number of years now and, together with my family, I like to do my bit for the welfare of cats and dogs in Spain.

Covid19 has left a heavy impact on the refugio in Spain, many people took an "outside excuse" dog, which, once the lockdowns were reduced, were dumped on our organisation and others.

In addition, the current economic climate in combination with a multitude of dumped dogs is having a severe impact on our financial ability to continue to provide all animals with food and medication. Also, the forest fires that have been ravaging the area where we are located for the past few weeks have caused sky-high water bills.

Therefore, I would like to make an appeal for massive support and donations to alleviate the distress and suffering of the animals.

I don't want to do this just like that, I would like to offer something in return, because just asking for money is not my thing. In return, I have registered for the famous Bornem "Death March", which starts on Friday 12 August at 21:00, during which we cover 100 kilometres on foot within 24 hours.

Supporters along the way or at the finish line are of course welcome!

So herewith a warm call to sponsors to support us. The collected money goes 100% to Ace Shin and of course I would be extremely happy if this would result in a nice amount of money. From the 11th till the 25th of September I will be in the refugio in Mijas myself and together with Fabienne and the team I will try to figure out how and on what we can best spend the collected money.

Feel free to take a look at our website www.ace-charity.org or on our facebook pages Shin Fabienne Paques or ACE-Charity Fabienne Paques for more information about our organisation.

Deposits can be made on BE26 7755 9229 2529 with the reference ACE SHIN - Death March 2022.

Whether I will succeed or not I cannot say in advance, but you can be sure that I will do my utmost to reach the finish and earn every euro I have been paid.

I will also post my tracking number and the tracking link on social media so you can follow "live" how it's going.

Thanks in advance for your support!
