The galgo - beautiful, noble Spanish greyhound

The Galgo Espanol or Spanish Greyhound is a noble and ancient breed of dog and a member of the sighthound family. It's possible that the English greyhound is a descendant as some breeders cross bred Galgos and Greyhounds to produce a faster, more powerful dog for the track.

Galgos look similar to Greyhounds but they are generally smaller and lighter than Greyhounds with longer tails and a long head. Unlike Greyhounds, whose coats are always smooth, the Galgo coat can also be rough. There's a wide range of colour types from jet black to pure white and all shades in between - brindle, golden, toasted, red and even more.

The Galgo character is similar to the Greyhound, which is to say that they are gentle and laid back and real couch potatoes - sharing the ability to sleep the day away with their friends the cats. For more than 90% of Galgos are cat friendly and almost all love other dogs and are great with children. An ideal pet for a young family, indeed for any family.

We've cared for many beautiful Galgos in our years at El Refugio. And many now are in forever homes with owners who adore them. We have quite a few new ones in the shelter now. Each one will make a family very happy indeed. Please take a look at the website and see if you would choose one of these noble, gentle and loving dogs to join your own family.

Diya

Just cooling my feets.

Which one would you choose?

Look at me - I'm lovely, don't you think?

Someone's spilt the kibble!

I will love you to pieces and be no trouble at all.

Safe from the hunters ...

... soaking up the sun.
