The incredible story of Opie

A cautionary tale with a happy ending. But it might have been so different.

Do you remember Opie stolen in 2007!!! Found again, tied to the gate of the killing station, deaf, blind and sick…..

Reunited after 8 long years.

Poor, sweet Opie when he arrived at the Refugio

When the killing station phoned me to ask if I could take Opie because of his bad condition I immediately said yes. He was dehydrated, suffering from an ear infection, his eyes were very bad, he was deaf and blind and his chip showed that he had been stolen in 2007.

Everything was tried to find his owners but they didn’t live at the old address anymore. A registered letter was sent but no answer came, nothing. We were free to give Opie up for adoption.

What had happened to Opie and his owners? This is their story.

In 2007, Opie, then called Lolo, was stolen in Algeciras during an innocent walk. His owners had 2 Pugs, they were their sweethearts and meant everything to them. They were well looked after and the young couple was crazy about their dogs until the day their dog was stolen………
They tried everything to find their dog but the years went by……..Their sadness never stopped……

Last week their former neighbor found by accident the letter on the ground and asked the brother of Lolo's owner if the letter was meant for his brother. He said it was and he then brought the letter to his brother……

What a coincidence! If the neighbor had not found the lost letter on the ground, Lolo would never have come home again! Coincidence or not, the ball started rolling and this afternoon the bosses came to us to collect their dog, after 8 years!

The reunion was very emotional: old Opie didn’t know what was happening to him!

Where had this poor soul lived for so long only to be dumped at a killing station to be destroyed
mercilessly? Our old boy is home again and his owners want to make him happy for a while. At the place where he came from  “HOME” but from where he was once taken away, by whom? If only he could talk, but he is silent……..His story, his past has marked him: blind, deaf and sad. He isn’t the Lolo he was before but his owners took him so lovingly into their hearts that it gave us goose bumps…….

Opie is home!!!
