Fabienne's Diary: Our Bobientje is no more...

 Wednesday 27 April 2022

This morning we had to let go our Bobientje, after she lost her senses.

Who was Bobientje?

A broodbred bitch that came to us already heavily psychologically disturbed, extremely afraid and extremely special. In the beginning, and 4 years later still, she was heavily traumatised. She had lost her trust in people because of her hard time with the breeder. It is unbelievable what those people do to animals. And Bobientje was a sad example of that.

How I hate the breeders. With our Bobientje we have yet another sad experience.  For years she was happy in her own way, with us she was free and could do whatever she wanted. We still couldn't cuddle her, except when we were lying quietly in bed at night, then she had confidence, but you couldn't stand up. No matter how hard we tried and how much we loved her, she did love us but in her own way.

Our little, big rascal, who was completely confused psychologically, was still a part of our hearts, just like all the dogs at home, who finally found love and rest in our midst. We will miss you... You were a wounded soul, but we loved you no matter what...

Rest in peace now sweetheart. Never out of our hearts, but far too early to go...

Bobientje with her friend Jules.

Don't forget it's Open Day tomorrow .... the first for a very long time.

Saturday 23rd April, 2022

Tomorrow, 24th April, we are holding the first Open Day for some years ... due of course to Corona and the lockdowns. It's been a difficult time for everyone but now we're coming out of it and are looking forward to welcoming our visitors and showing you what we do. Our dogs and cats are excited too, they love visitors. So com along between 13 h and 15 h. You will be very, very welcome.

Long stayer of the month: ADA

 Saturday 23rd April 2022

She deserves a chance.

Ada was rescued, along with her sisters and brothers, from a controlled colony that was under threat because of corona virus. The colonies could no longer be controlled due to the lockdown, which resulted in a huge number of wild births. Ada was not put back after sterilisation because she is not tame, but also not wild, she has a chance for a better life. She lets herself be petted by the people she knows but is very independent. We would like to give her a chance at a home where people have time and patience to give her more confidence. She is not a cuddly cat. We hope that with time and good care she will gain confidence and then may find happiness in an adoption for life. For more information about this lovely cat, please click on her name above.

Sorry for the lack of posts ... it's all Teddy's fault.

 Sunday April 17th 2022

Teddy - the culprit 😊

I was concerned to see that it's actually nine days since my last post. I'm really sorry about that ... it is Teddy's fault really ... but not really. Last Monday he suddenly couldn't walk, again, and was in great distress. This had happened before Christmas too: X-rays show a degenerative disc disease. He's only got three legs so this puts even more a strain on his poor little back.

I rushed him to see Aga, my lovely Polish vet where he stayed all day, with the prospect of the veterinary hospital and MRI scans and goodness knows what hanging over him - and me. Luckily, that evening, after morphine injections and a day of rest, he was allowed to come home.

On Wednesday Aga said with rest and permanent medication he should be OK, but still the prospect of having wheels so he can run around is a definite option, hopefully still some time in the future. She was happy for me to go to London, where I had a whole lot of meetings that would cause problems if I had to cancel. I would have done, of course, if it affected Teddy's welfare. But he was staying with a lovely family overnight; I had lots of reassuring texts and photos. Indeed they love him so much they threatened to keep him!

He's home now, not allowed to climb up or down stairs or jump for the moment, though he doesn't understand that very well. He is gradually improving - though no walks for the time being.

I really am sorry about the lack of posts and will try to catch up this week.

No walks for the time being. Sigh!

I guess I'd better stay in bed then!

In praise of the smiling ones ....

Monday 4th April, 2022

Staffordshire Bull Terriers, affectionately known as Staffies, are shorthaired, pure bred dogs ... with origins in the county of Staffordshire, in the West Midlands in the UK. Staffies were bred to be fighting dogs, in times when that was an acceptable form of entertainment. Obviously that is no longer the case.

However, in the wrong hands, these beautiful dogs can become aggressive, as indeed can any dog with those genes. Some people who wish to appear 'hard', often though not exclusively young men, think having a dog that also looks 'hard' is a good idea. They also think it's a good idea to mistreat these poor creatures, or train them to be aggressive. Thus poor Staffies get a bad reputation. Their superficial resemblance to Pit Bull Terriers doesn't help. As ever, it's not the dog, it's the owner at fault.

People who are ignorant of dog breeds and of the real facts become fearful, and this fear spreads. Battersea Dogs and Cats home, one of the largest and most reputable shelters in the UK, find Staffies the hardest dogs to rehome. Often Staffies make up 50% of the dogs in their care. So very sad.

As with all dogs, provided that Staffies are properly trained and socialised when they are puppies, there's no problem. Known as the 'smiling dog', they are fearless and intelligent, super affectionate, reliable, loyal and courageous. The cuddliest of cuddly dogs. They love people and form strong bonds with their families. They are so playful and patient with children that they are also nicknamed 'nanny dogs'.

Staffies are the softest most loving dogs. Far from being aggressive, they are more likely to lick you to death.  All they want to do is please you, to be with you and to love you.
