Our Lana (formerly Avellana)

 Tuesday, April 6, 2021

More than 4 months ago we picked up our Lana (then Avellana) from her foster family in the Netherlands. We had met the week before and the click was immediately there: what a sweet dog! Still a bit scared, but she was already on our lap during the introduction and let herself be cuddled. So the decision was not difficult and Lana came to us pleasantly.

After a very restless first day in which she was very focused on escaping, we finally understood why people kept asking how high the fence was. Fortunately, Lana quickly attached herself to us and to the house. She was very sweet and tried very hard to be loved as well. So far no problem ... during the day ... But then the nights: Lana absolutely didn't want to be left alone! We thought we had to be very consistent and allow her squeak, but that was very wrong and the squeak only got worse.

I ended up sleeping on the guest bed downstairs for a few months. First next to the crate and then further and further away from her. When she squeaked, I made a sound and that was enough to reassure her.

We also got help from a dog behaviorist from around here, who explained to us how stress can build up in dogs and what you can do to reduce it. For example, while walking Lana was also a bit anxious and by following the tips she soon felt much more comfortable in her own skin.

Now, several months later, she is much calmer and more confident. She enjoys walking (when it is not raining) and already has some dog friends. She doesn't really play, but she walks towards them with a raised tail, sniffs once and then she goes her own way again.

We were a bit worried that her hunting instinct wouldn't allow her to run free, but she doesn't really hunt. She does have an eye for all the birds around her and she sniffs at every trail. But she likes to be with us so much and she keeps an eye on us so closely that we are not at all afraid of her breaking out.

As a real Spanish lady, she now really enjoys the first sunny days. Every dash of sun in the garden is used and she enjoys it to the fullest.

We enjoy it fully too, because it is so wonderful to see her enjoy it.

Thank you ACE for your beautiful work! Because of you many dogs like Lana get a new chance in life!

Greetings,

Edward, Maria and Anouk
