They had dropped him off in Viv's street; her neighbors told her that they saw a little white ball stumbling,.They called her to come and see and she did, and then the cruel reality started to surface,.
When he came to us we were gathered around him. The white ball had rotting ears, a heavy inflammation in his eyes, his gums looked so white that it was a wonder he was still breathing. But that tail went back and forth on hearing sweet voices and people crying for the umpteenth defenceless victim of someone who dares to call himself a human.
We baptised him Roelie, after Viv's husband, out of respect for people like him with a heart for animals. We hope that we can still save Roelie. It is touch and go and many say that we would be better off putting him to sleep but we who now know him and already love him want to give him a chance, this little white ball without value.
Thrown away like a piece of dirt, with his rotting ears in the flaming sun, who kept on drinking when Viv offered him that first bowl of water for a long time, who eats here as if it were his first meal. Who despite the pain and the misery is friendly and there's that wagging tail. Who has as much right to life as anyone else.
Little man, you've seen hell, that's for sure. We're going to do our best - who knows, maybe we'll win this battle together Roelie.
