Where there's a will ...

... some would have just given up.  This poor little fellow, only 4 months old, has a malformation in his oesophagus. It is too big and hasn't enough muscle.  If he ate in the normal way, he'd die.  But his owners didn't give up on him, they found this novel way to feed him. Brilliant, isn't it.

Carol's Golden Basket ....

These happy pictures show our sweet little cocker spaniel, Carol, with her lovely new owners, who came to the Refugio and chose her specially.

The other side ...

Of course working at the Refugio you see some sad and terrible sights, such as poor little Fati who's story you can read below.  But once they've been rescued and taken to the Refugio, all the dogs young and old, healthy or sick are loved and cared for and have the chance of that longed-for golden basket.  Over 12,000 dogs are now living with loving and adoring families all over Europe, and even - in the case of our beagles - in America.  Some lucky dogs get to go home with Fabienne and Dirk - as foster children or even forever.

I've been really good today.  I have. Really.

"You shouldn't do it to a dog" - sadly there are people who do ....

Hard to believe but it's true. Under a heap of stinking fur is a little dog. But now she is clean and safe and she has a name - Fati.

Her disgustingly matted and filthy coat had to be cut off, very slowly and with great patience. But first her nails had to be seen to - these long nails. Unprecedented. No-one had ever seen anything quite this bad. 

She was completely bent double, so that it would hurt less when she tried to move. Even now, she barely dares to move. Even now with her nails cut and her coat removed.

She weighs barely two pounds. But there again, she's a Yorkie and here such dogs are considered disposable. Her hair, her fur and and her eyes are inflamed .. ... it was horrible to see. 

It's clear that she's had puppies. In that state?  How could she possibly have given birth.  How did this little mother feel?  Poor little mite. 

Spain is indeed a strange country, such beauty ... and such unbelievable cruelty.

Dear owners, dog lovers, friends of A.C.E., travellers …

Many of our dogs have been offered new homes and are waiting impatiently, as are their new families, but they are have to stay with us until we can find enough people to help us fly them out.

We urgently need people who are flying from Malaga to the Netherlands or Belguim, who will volunteer to escort a dog or dogs on their flight. It doesn’t cost anything and it involves nothing more than agreeing to check the dogs in at check-in. We’d be so grateful if you would spread the word

It works like this. First you contact us and let us have your flight details. We will then contact the airline to reserve space on board for the dogs. Someone from A.C.E. will bring the dog(s) in their flight kennels to the check in counter at Malaga airport and will meet you there, in plenty of time.

You don’t have to do anything. We take care of the check in procedure with you, finish the administrative processing and then give you the pet passports. You then board your flight in the normal way. We will see the dogs onto the plane.

When you arrive at your destination airport staff will bring the dogs in their flight kennels to the carousel where your luggage will arrive. All you have to do then is wheel the kennels to the arrivals hall where you will be met by people from A.C.E. who will take over from there. They will also collect the dog passport(s), which you have been given in Malaga.

It’s a small effort, with very great results. You are link between their old life and their new happiness. Thanks to you, our dogs can fly home to a better life with loving new owners
